Vein diseases like venous insufficiency and varicose veins can be treated with minimally invasive, pain-free procedures, getting you back to enjoying life’s simple pleasures.
However, as with any medical treatment, there are some post-procedure restrictions following the treatment that you need to be aware of.
Sclerotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, laser ablation and Varithena are some common vein treatments. Walking is encouraged after all of them, as it keeps the blood circulating through normally functioning veins and reduces the risk of blood clots.
Let’s look at some other precautions that patients are required to take to ensure complete recovery:
Veins Treatment – Day 1
The latest vein treatments facilitate speedy recovery, which means you can resume your daily activities right away. However, you should avoid stress for at least two days after treatment, in addition to waiting a day before showering.
You may experience some swelling, bruising, or discomfort in the treated area, but these symptoms are usually temporary, and don’t require prescription medication. Consult with your doctor if you experience severe pain.
Depending on your veins treatment, you may even be instructed to wear a compression stocking or support hose to help heal your legs.
7–10 Days Post Vein Treatment Procedure
Those who lead a vigorously active life are advised to wait for 7–10 days before diving back into an extensive workout routine, such as running, squatting, cycling or weight lifting.
Refrain from lifting anything over 20 pounds until 10 days post-treatment. Weight bearing exercises that are focused on the legs may impact the healing process, causing the treated vein to reopen.
Also make sure to avoid soaking in hot tubs, bathtubs, and pools during this time to minimize the risk of infections developing.
A pulling sensation or tightness along the length of the treated vein is expected and normal, along with a little inflammation.
The area may be swollen and red to the touch with a sensation of warmth. This is because the vein causes an inflammation reaction as it closes. This is expected to occur a week after radiofrequency or laser ablation treatment, and 3–6 weeks after sclerotherapy treatment.
In some rare cases, varicose veins may reappear or an infection may develop.
It’s advised to follow up with your vein doctor to ensure your treated veins are healing properly.
